Abby Danford, MA
Professional Counselor Associate
Pronouns: She/Her/Hers
I am a Professional Counselor Associate and recent graduate from Pacific University’s Master’s in Applied Clinical Psychology program. I completed my clinical practicum with LifeWorks NW’s Women’s Residential Substance Use Treatment program, where I gained experience providing group substance use and individual mental therapy to women in recovery. Before beginning my clinical training, I worked as a professional research assistant conducting psychological research with adolescents, with a primary focus on studying substance use behaviors. My master’s research also focused on substance use, particularly co-occurring substance use and mental health concerns in adults.
My clinical practice draws upon contextual cognitive-behavioral therapies, meaning that I utilize interventions that target how clients relate to their thoughts and emotions, rather than the content of these internal experiences. Evidence-based interventions that I commonly use in therapy include dialectical behavior therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and mindfulness-based relapse prevention. My clinical perspective is informed by biosocial and intersectional feminist theories, which support my trauma-informed therapeutic style. I place an emphasis on how my clients’ sociocultural context impacts their lives when conceptualizing their presenting concerns. My approach to treating clients with alcohol and substance use disorders translates well to treating clients who want to decrease avoidance, improve their impulse control skills, and increase their ability to cope with distressing emotions. The therapeutic relationships I build with clients are founded in respect, authenticity, and warmth. I believe that every client holds the innate ability to improve their wellbeing, and my role as their therapist is to assist them in discovering their own insight and developing the tools to make their desired life changes.
As a pre-licensed clinician, I practice under the license of my supervisor and program director, Dr. Erica Aten. Through supervision with Dr. Aten, I receive valuable clinical guidance and consultation that elevates the quality of services I provide to my clients.
